If you’ve been wondering whether your child needs an Autism, ADHD or other developmental diagnosis before starting therapy, the answer is simple:
No. A diagnosis is not required to access therapy.
Many families notice that something doesn’t quite seem right long before they have any answers. Perhaps your child is struggling with communication, play skills, emotional regulation, sensory processing, fine motor skills or everyday routines. You might have concerns, but you’re still waiting for assessments or simply aren’t sure what the next step should be.
The good news is that you don’t need to wait.
Early Support Matters
Research consistently shows that early support can make a significant difference to a child’s development. Therapy focuses on understanding your child’s strengths, challenges and individual needs, not on waiting for a label.
At Stronger Together Foundation, we support children with developmental delays, disabilities and who are neurodivergent through evidence-based Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy services. Our focus is on helping children build confidence, communication and independence while supporting the whole family.
What If We Are Still Waiting for a Diagnosis?
Long waitlists for paediatricians and specialists are common, and many children begin therapy while these assessments are still underway.
You may wish to seek support if your child:
- Is late to start talking or struggles to communicate
- Has difficulty with play or social interactions
- Finds certain sounds, textures or environments overwhelming
- Has challenges with attention, emotional regulation or transitions
- Struggles with fine motor skills, handwriting or self-care tasks
- Seems to be developing differently from their peers
These concerns alone are enough to start a conversation.
Do I Need NDIS Funding to Access Therapy?
No. While many families access Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy through the NDIS, it isn’t the only way to receive support.
Private Therapy
Families can choose to self-fund therapy sessions without a diagnosis or NDIS plan. This allows support to begin straight away, rather than waiting for assessments, funding approvals or lengthy waitlists.
Medicare and Private Health Insurance
Depending on your circumstances, you may also be able to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of therapy through Medicare or your private health insurance.
If your child has a chronic or long-term condition that has lasted, or is expected to last, six months or more, your GP may be able to prepare a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan. This can provide Medicare rebates for up to five eligible allied health services each calendar year, which can include Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Your GP can advise whether your child is eligible.
If you have private health insurance with extras cover, you may also be able to claim a rebate for Speech Therapy or Occupational Therapy sessions. The amount you can claim and any annual limits will depend on your insurer and level of cover, so it’s worth checking directly with your health fund before commencing therapy.
NDIS Funding
Some children may be eligible for support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). An NDIS plan can help fund therapy and other supports, but you do not need to wait for NDIS approval before seeking help.
If you’re unsure which funding pathway is right for your family, our team is happy to talk through your options.
Not Sure Whether Therapy Is Needed?
Sometimes families simply want reassurance.
That’s why Stronger Together Foundation offers free Communication Screeners and free Occupational Therapy Screeners. These appointments provide an opportunity to discuss your concerns with an experienced therapist and determine whether further assessment or therapy may be beneficial.

Every Child Deserves Support When They Need It
A diagnosis can provide understanding and open doors to funding and services, but it should never be a barrier to receiving support.
Likewise, while NDIS funding can make therapy more accessible for many families, it isn’t the only way to access help.
If you have concerns about your child’s development, trust your instincts. Early intervention is most effective when support begins as soon as concerns arise, rather than waiting for a diagnosis or funding to fall into place.
