Every child communicates in their own unique way. For some children, particularly many autistic children, language doesn’t develop one word at a time. Instead, they learn language in larger chunks or “gestalts” before gradually breaking these down into more flexible language. This is known as Gestalt Language Processing (GLP).
As awareness of Gestalt Language Processing continues to grow, so too does the need for parents, educators and professionals to better understand what it is, what it looks like, and how to best support children who communicate this way.
At the Stronger Together Foundation, we’re committed to sharing evidence-based knowledge that empowers families and professionals alike. That’s why we’re excited to introduce one of our own Speech & Language Pathologists, Emma, who will be leading our upcoming workshop on Gestalt Language Processing.
Emma has developed a special interest in Gestalt Language Processing, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and neurodiversity-affirming practice. Her passion for GLP began while she was searching for better ways to understand and support the autistic children she was working with. What started as a single professional development course quickly became a deep interest in a different way of understanding communication, one that resonated with the children and families she was supporting every day.
Since then, Emma has continued to expand her knowledge through further professional development, current research and hands-on clinical experience. She has supported gestalt language processors across homes, early childhood settings, schools and clinic environments, helping families and professionals better understand children’s communication and respond in ways that are meaningful, practical and affirming.
In this workshop, Emma will unpack what Gestalt Language Processing is, how it differs from traditional language development, and what it can look and sound like in everyday life. Most importantly, she’ll share practical strategies to help participants confidently support communication in ways that honour each child’s individual communication journey.
Whether you’re a parent, educator or therapist who is completely new to Gestalt Language Processing or looking to deepen your understanding, this workshop will leave you with greater confidence and practical tools you can apply immediately.
