Is my child’s speech on track?

What does typical development look like?ย

Childrenย donโ€™tย all follow the same timeline, butย hereโ€™sย a general guide:ย

By 12 monthsย

  • Responds to their nameย ย
  • Uses gestures like pointing or wavingย ย
  • Makes a range of sounds (babbling)ย ย

By 18 monthsย

  • Uses around 10โ€“20 words (or communicates meaning in other ways)ย ย
  • Understands simple instructionsย ย
  • Points to show interestย ย

By 2 yearsย

  • Combines two words (e.g. โ€œmore milkโ€)ย ย
  • Vocabulary is growingย ย
  • Understands more than they can sayย ย

By 3 yearsย

  • Uses short sentencesย ย
  • Can be understood by familiar adults most of the timeย ย
  • Follows simple directionsย ย

These are guides, not rules. Some children may develop skills earlier, later, or in a different order, especially neurodivergent children.ย

Signs your child mayย benefitย from extra supportย

You know your child best. If somethingย doesnโ€™tย feel quite right,ย itโ€™sย worth exploring.ย

Some signs to look out for:ย

  • Limited use of words or difficulty expressing needsย ย
  • Not responding to their name or to simple instructionsย ย
  • Frustration when trying to communicateย ย
  • Speech that is difficult to understand for their ageย ย
  • Loss of previously used words or skillsย ย
  • Preferring to communicate without words (which is valid, but may stillย benefitย from support to expand options)ย ย

Itโ€™sย important to say: these signsย donโ€™tย mean something is โ€œwrongโ€ with your child. They simplyย indicateย they mayย benefitย from support to build communication skills in ways that work for them.ย

What ifย Iโ€™mย not sure?ย

Youย donโ€™tย need to wait untilย youโ€™reย certain.ย

Many families tell us they had a โ€œgut feelingโ€ early on. Acting on that feeling can makeย a big difference, not because something is wrong, but because early support canย open upย more opportunities for your child to connect,ย participate, and be understood.ย

A screening or initial chat can give you clarity and peace of mind.ย

How speech therapy can helpย

Speech therapy looks different for every child. It might involve:ย

  • Supporting early communication (gestures, sounds, first words)ย ย
  • Building understanding and following instructionsย ย
  • Expanding vocabulary and sentence useย ย
  • Supporting alternative communication methods (e.g. visuals, AAC)ย ย
  • Helping reduce frustration and increase confidenceย ย

Importantly, therapy is play-based, relationship-focused, and tailored to your childโ€™s strengths and interests.ย
