Getting to know someone often starts with something simple: a game, a shared activity or a conversation. At our recent Stronger Sibs Day Camp, these everyday moments helped a larger group of siblings build connections across different ages, personalities and experiences.
Across the camp, children enjoyed outdoor adventures, hands-on activities and time to talk about life with a sibling with disability. There was plenty of fun, alongside opportunities to share things they might not often discuss with other friends.
Making connections, one activity at a time
We began by pairing children with someone they didn’t already know, giving them a chance to make a connection beyond familiar faces.
Games and hands-on activities helped those introductions grow into friendships. Working in pairs and small groups created different ways to participate, with room for children to contribute and get to know each other at their own pace.
Some of the strongest connections developed during free time. Gaga ball, pool and the games room gave children opportunities to teach each other, share favourite games and enjoy being together. These relaxed moments were a valuable part of camp, allowing friendships to grow naturally.
Space for the whole sibling experience
During our dedicated “Sibs time”, children explored both the positive and the harder parts of having a sibling with disability.
Through activities and conversations, including lucky dip questions in smaller groups, they could share their experiences and hear from others. The group brought together children with a range of perspectives and support needs, reminding us that every sibling’s experience is different.
Having space for those differences matters. Children could talk about what they enjoy, what can be tricky and what life looks like in their family, without needing everyone to feel the same way.
Adventures to share
Canoeing, flying fox, crate climb, bush initiatives, archery tag and laser tag were among the camp highlights.
Alongside the conversations, these activities gave children plenty to do and enjoy together. Shared adventures offered another way to connect, with new experiences becoming part of the group’s shared memories.
Thank you to our Stronger Sibs families
Thank you to every child and family who joined us, and to the team who brought the program together. The children’s willingness to join in, share and learn from one another helped make this camp special.
Stronger Sibs creates time and space for siblings to have fun, build friendships and feel supported in their own right. Seeing connections grow across the group was a highlight we’ll carry into future programs.
