Communication Creates Possibility: Celebrating our Speech Pathology team

Last month, we joined communities across Australia to celebrate Speech Pathology Week and recognise the important contribution speech pathologists make to the lives of individuals and families.

The theme for Speech Pathology Week 2026 was Communication creates possibility.

Communication helps people connect, participate, learn, make choices, develop relationships and experience a sense of belonging. When someone receives the right support to communicate or manage swallowing difficulties, new possibilities can open across every part of their life.

Speech Pathology Week is also an opportunity to raise awareness of communication and swallowing difficulties, while helping the wider community better understand the diverse role of speech pathologists and the difference their support can make.

Creating possibilities every day

At Stronger Together Foundation, our speech pathologists work alongside children, families, educators and other important people in each child’s life.

Their work is about much more than completing activities during a therapy session. It is about understanding each child as an individual, discovering how they communicate best and developing practical strategies that can be used in their everyday environments.

This might mean supporting a child to express their needs, participate at school or preschool, build relationships, enjoy social interactions or feel more confident communicating in a way that works for them.

Our Continuous Improvement Program includes regular feedback calls with parents and carers. The feedback we receive offers a meaningful insight into what families value most about our team: their patience, knowledge, compassion, adaptability and genuine commitment to every child.

Building connection and trust

For many children, connection comes first. When a child feels safe, understood and genuinely enjoys spending time with their therapist, therapy can become something they look forward to.

One parent told us that Emma K connected with their child almost immediately:

“He gets so excited to see her. They bonded so quickly. It is lovely to see him connect with her.”

Another family described Bronwyn as feeling like part of their extended family:

“He doesn’t go to people or engage with others easily. We really see results with him interacting with Bronwyn. She gives him so much care.”

Families spoke just as warmly about Michelle, describing the way she plays, engages and builds comfort and trust:

“She is so knowledgeable and really engages with him. They are always playing and engaging together. She’s an asset.”

Children do not all communicate, learn or participate in the same way. Effective speech pathology support needs to be flexible, responsive and shaped around each individual child.

Families also recognised Emma S’s patience and her willingness to revisit information and explain strategies:

“She is so sweet. She is constantly going over things and explaining them to me, and she has lots of patience.”

For one family, Anwyn’s impact could be summed up simply:

“What do I appreciate about Anwyn? Everything. Her communication and compassion towards a child, and the way she sees their needs.”

Working in partnership

Speech pathology is most powerful when children, families, therapists and educators work together.

Families value therapists who listen to them, recognise their child’s strengths and draw upon their knowledge as parents and carers.

One parent shared this about Grace:

“She is always telling me all the things he is doing well. I really like how she is willing to listen to me, take my advice and work together with me.”

These reflections capture what Communication creates possibility looks like in practice. It is a child feeling heard. A parent feeling supported. An educator gaining strategies that can be carried into everyday routines. A family seeing their child connect, participate and grow.

To our speechies: thank you for the knowledge, creativity, patience and care you bring to children and families every day. We are incredibly proud of our speech pathology team.
